Down the Fairway
By Robert T. Jones Jr. and O. B. Keeler

Originally published in 1927, Bobby Jones' Down the Fairway has become what Sports Illustrated calls "an incontestable classic." Part memoir, part golf instructional, part golf history and including wonderful vintage photographs Down the Fairway is a must read for all who care about this most fascinating sport. Amazingly, Bobby Jones, along with sports journalist O.B. Keeler, wrote this book when he was only 24 years old. His thinking was that, having just become the first golfer ever to win both U.S. and British Open titles in one year (1926), he would never perform at such a high level again. It seemed a good time, then, to tell his story.

Kiltie the Kingmaker
The Ten Lost Lessons of Bobby Jones's Teacher Stewart Maiden
Sidney Matthew, Editor

Stewart Maiden was affectionately called Kiltie by his friends at East Lake, and he became one of the golfing world's most successful teachers at a time when golf was exploding onto the American sports scene. Maiden's silky smooth golf swing was grounded in the Carnoustie tradition brought to these shores by more than 300 Scotsmen who came to work in the golf industry in the early 1900s. Within three decades of Kiltie arriving at East Lake, three of his students had won national and numerous other championships. His thoughts and techniques on the golf swing produced star pupils like Alexa Stirling Fraser, Perry Adair, Charlie Yates, and, of course, Bob Jones.

Fairways of Life
Wisdom and Inspiration from the Greatest Game
By Matthew E. Adams

The game of golf is a great metaphor for the game of life. Fairways of Life will remind you why you love golf and will help you to celebrate each day in a more meaningful way. You will be both inspired and entertrained by this unique collection of stories from the royal and ancient game. The knowledge and experience of some of golf's greatest stars help you learn from many lifetimes of tribulations and triumphs.

From the Foreword by Arnold Palmer:
My dad taught me that I was not the only person to inhabit this earth, and that I should treat everyone with the same respect and dignity with which I hoped they would treat me. He taught me the value of hard work, commitment, dedication, and loyalty. He helped me to see that no man stands alone, and that the day you start to believe that you are better than your fellow man, well, I guess you truly are alone. The game of golf has taught me the value of perseverance and imagination, of having a game plan and knowing who you are. And it has revealed to me more than a lifetime's worth of universal truths.

Matthew Adams is a New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, a golf television personality, golf equipment expert, and a highly sought after professional speaker. Adams' writing has appeared in newspapers and magazines throughout America, including the Los Angeles Times. Adams can be seen weekly on The Golf Channel in addition to his syndicated product reviews. In addition to writing Fairways of Life, Adams is a coauthor of Chicken Soup for the Soul of America, which benefited the New York Area Relief Fund; Chicken Soup for the NASCAR Soul, the best-selling NASCAR book of all time, and The NASCAR Xtreme Race Journal for Kids, which was published in 2005.

To the Nines
By Anthony Pioppi

There are nearly 17,000 golf courses in the United States. Although only a quarter of them are nine-holerse, it seems as if every golfer has a personal history on a nine-hole course.

Somewhere along the way, nine-hole courses fell out of favor even though such legendary layouts as Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kansas, began as nine-hole layouts before expanding to eighteen. Some courses, such as Whitinsville in Central Massachusetts, remain as nine holes, while still others such as Ocean Links in Rhode Island—maybe the greatest nine holes ever—have vanished.

Nearly every legendary architect of the Golden Age, MacKenzie, Maxwell, MacDonald, Ross, and more, all have brilliant nine-holers to their credit.

To the Nines is a book with passion that takes you from the top of Cape Cod to high atop the Cumberland Plateau in eastern Tennessee, to the redwood forests of northern California. Along the way you’ll find out about Katharine Hepburn’s even-par round and the disaster that followed, listen for the ghosts of Seth Raynor and Francis Ouimet, and journey to one of the most exclusive clubs in America.

The Golf Gods: Who They Are, What They Want, and How to Appease Them
By Robert Brown; illustrated by Roger Schillerstrom

Your ball miraculously skipped across the water and onto the green or buried under the lip of the bunker. Your best-ever long iron approach shot hit the flagstick and caromed into a greenside lake. Once you skulled a five iron 30 yards over the green only to have your ball whack the back of a black SUV and rebound delicately onto the green for a routine birdie putt. Yes, this is the work of the Golf Gods.

Since 1822 they have ruled the links. Now we know that 23 gods exist to help any golfer enjoy the game more if we are only willing to accept their help. Meet Phor, the first golf god and ruler of all things golf-related; Maat, grand-nephew of Baccus, governs the 19th hole; Chit, the god of bunkers; Oopmon rules the putter, and many more "beings" with the intent to make you a better player. They reward good play, and sometimes even bad.

This is one of the most unique, clever, and entertaining books in the category and is guaranteed to be a bestseller—through divine intervention, if nothing else!

A Hacker’s Humiliations: A Glossary of Golf Grotesqueries
By Joel Zuckerman

Most of us golf without much ability. Without flair, without confidence, without poise. Our skills are scarce, we lack the knack. But you know what the teeming, tee-box masses do have? Embarrassing moments. By the bushel. For the first time ever, these Hacker’s Humiliations, three dozen in number, are catalogued in alphabetical and chronological order, from the tee to the fairway to the green. Some of them are humorous ("Aquaman," who tumbles in, straining after his Top-Flite, getting drenched in the process, or "Jack the Pants Ripper," who literally comes apart at the seams). Others are horrific ("Rick O’Shea" risks life and limb as he endeavors to avoid a tree limb, or "The Assassin," who inadvertently cold-cocks a playing partner with an errant shot). But most, (the Bunker Chunker, the Yipper, Anna Banana, Off-the-Planet-Janet, etc.) as the title implies, are simply Humiliating.

This glossary of the game’s grotesqueries are not just a problem for the faceless golfers of the world—there are Hacker Hall of Fame Moments within the text, chronicling the unforgettable stumbling of stars through different moments in golf history.

Speaking of golf stars, some of the most recognized names in the game have provided solutions to these various and nefarious Humiliations.

The Vardon Invasion
Harry’s Triumphant 1900 American Tour

By Bob Labbance with Brian Siplo

In 1899, Harry Vardon had a Tiger Woods-type year. The 29-year-old dominated the competitive golf scene in the United Kingdom, winning nearly 75 percent of the challenge matches and professional tournaments in which he participated. Due to this background, the American-based Spalding Company offered Vardon a lucrative endorsement contract and a chance to tour America and display his skills against all the top players of the era in 1900.

Labbance and Siplo have re-created Vardon’s tour along with a portrait of golf in the United States in 1900. Included are many period photographs of both players and venues. In many cases, the reader might exclaim, "They played golf on that?"
